Getting Your L’s
Illawarra Riders have a policy of encouraging all those who are interested in obtaining their Motorcycle license and begin the fascination of the Freedom of the Road.
You will have many questions and here are a few answers:
How old do you have to be?
•16 Years & 9months of Age.
How do I get a motorcycle license?
•Attend a Pre-learner courses
•Once you have successfully completed the course, you will be issued with a pre-learner Certificate of Competence.
•You then, go to your nearest motor registry and:
•Take your Pre-learner Certificate of Competence.
•Take Proof of Identity documents.
•Complete an application form.
•Pass an eyesight test.
•Pass the rider knowledge test. A fee is applicable and a booking may be required. (bookings for a knowledge test can now be made from the myTests section of this website or by phoning the RTA on 13 22 13).
•Pay the licence fee.
You will then be issued with a learner rider licence, valid for six months.
What motorcycles can I ride?
•In NSW, holders of learner and provisional motorcycle licenses are not permitted to ride a
motorcycle with an engine capacity exceeding 660ml or with a power to weight ratio
exceeding 150 kilowatts per tonne. A full list of LAMs (Learner Approved motorcycles) can be found here
